The decision behind this article: what to improve and what to measure in AI visibility.
What to ask for in an audit · Calculate the results of a round · Choose the interventions

A strong company can be missing from exactly the comparison that could influence its next contract: an AI assistant's answer to the buyer's question. Likewise, a name can be mentioned in an answer without the recommendation being accurate or suited to the buyer.

This is the problem worth investigating for a business owner: what information about their business makes it into the answer, and in which situations. Company size, public reputation and relevance to a question are different things.

For 2027, what is at stake is your company's place in the comparison the buyer builds before contacting you. You can influence the quality of the information available and you can observe the answers. A measurable strategy starts from that observation.

The customer may start with a much more precise question

A buyer may search for "equipment supplier" or ask "which suppliers can deliver this type of equipment, with installation and service in my area?". The second phrasing puts the product, the location, delivery capacity and risk reduction into the same conversation.

Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use multiple related searches to build an answer. As a result, a very good page about a precise need can be relevant even if the company's home page does not address that need. [1]

For business, the implication is practical: the website has to explain in which situations your offer makes sense. "Complete solutions" leaves many questions open. A page that specifies the customer, the problem, the conditions and the documented experience gives useful information both to the buyer and to the systems looking for sources.

What it means for a brand to be chosen

A mention is not the same as a recommendation. A recommendation does not mean your page was cited. And a citation of an article signed by the company does not prove that the user chose the company's services.

In a serious evaluation, these outcomes are recorded separately:

  • Mention: the brand name appears in the answer.
  • Contextual recommendation: the brand is presented as an option for the stated need.
  • Citation: the answer points to a page as a source.
  • Accuracy: services, location and proof are described faithfully.
  • Commercial outcome: a visit, a relevant enquiry or a customer that can be attributed within the available measurement.

The separation matters. A report can show many mentions even though the business appears in questions that have little to do with its potential customers. Conversely, a single appearance in a very specific comparison can deserve a closer look.

Can your website be read?

Google states that there are no additional technical requirements or special schema for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a text snippet; meeting the conditions does not guarantee an appearance. Access to content, internal links and important information available as text remain relevant. [1]

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot and recommends allowing it access. Control of this crawler is separate from GPTBot, which is used for content that may go into model training. Allowing access for search does not automatically mean allowing use for training. [2]

These checks remove access barriers. They do not answer the question of why your offer would deserve to be presented to a particular buyer.

The offer has to be understandable and verifiable

A company can describe what it does with adjectives or with information that helps the choice. The difference shows in a simple example. "We are professional and innovative" doesn't clarify which projects are a fit. "We install systems for industrial halls, with these capacities, in these areas and under these conditions" provides points of comparison.

Case studies add context: the starting situation, the intervention, the period analysed and the result. The methodology explains how the figures were obtained. Service pages state what the offer includes and who it is for.

This is DDM's editorial recommendation: build a public presence precise enough that someone can verify your claims. It is not a guaranteed formula for being selected by an AI model. It is a discipline that improves the information available about the business.

How you can use Atlas to choose the companies to compare

To investigate the gap between size and presence, you can select from Atlas a group of companies in the same industry and the same reporting year. Then you test questions about needs those companies can meet.

But don't mix the financial ranking with a ranking of recommendations. Revenue can describe a firm's size, but it does not confirm its fit for a specific order. The research would follow the relationship between two distinct measurements, without assuming that the largest company should be recommended first.

Do you show up when the customer isn't searching for your name?

The question "what do you know about company X?" checks the information about a brand that is already known. The question "which suppliers can solve my problem?" tests a different commercial situation. Both are useful, but they serve different objectives.

A serious evaluation includes questions without the brand name, phrased from the customer's need. For example: "Which agencies can document experience in B2B lead generation in Romania?", "What should I check before choosing a supplier to expand an online store?" or "Compare the types of partners who can coordinate strategy, the website and customer acquisition". These are examples for the protocol, not answers that have already been measured.

What appears in the answerWhat you checkThe decision it supports
The brand is mentionedIn which questions and how often in the tested setWhere there is observable visibility
A page is citedThe URL, the passage and how well it matches the claimWhich content is used as a source
The offer is described incorrectlyThe service, geography, data and contradictory public informationWhich information needs correcting
The customer reaches the websiteThe identifiable source, the enquiry and the outcome in the CRMWhich commercial contribution can be tracked

Don't add all these signals up into a spectacular "AI score" without showing the definition. A brand cited for a piece of historical information is not automatically recommended for a contract. A competitor absent in one round may appear in another. Keeping the answers lets you investigate the change.

Can people understand what you've done just from what you've published?

A valuable case study explains the starting problem, the intervention, the period and the resulting metric. A service page states what you deliver, to whom and under what conditions. A company profile keeps the name, contact details and area of activity consistent. These also help the buyer who checks the information directly.

When evaluating a partner, follow the link between the starting problem and the documented result. DDM builds this link through research, strategy, pages and acquisition. Public case studies make it possible to check the interventions and the specific metrics.

Being present in the answer is the beginning. A correctly described offer, relevant proof and qualified demand show whether that presence has value.

What to track in your 2027 plan

Separate the presence report from the commercial report. In the first, you track the relevant questions, mentions, citations and errors. In the second, identifiable visits, enquiries, qualification and customers. Some influences cannot be attributed precisely; don't turn them into certain sales just because the brand was mentioned.

Correct unclear or contradictory public information first. Then develop the pages that answer buyers' needs and document your real experience. Repeat the measurement before declaring that an intervention changed visibility.

What you should receive when you pay for an AI visibility audit

A useful audit leaves you with a set of questions, archived answers and a list of interventions ordered by importance. Hand-picked screenshots and a score without a definition are not enough to decide a budget.

DeliverableWhat it must contain
The question setExact phrasing, the buyer's need and the reason each one is included
Test conditionsProduct, model where shown, date, language, new session and whether search was enabled
The evidenceFull answers, cited URLs and a record of absences
The diagnosisTechnical access, incorrect information and missing relevant content kept separate
The planAffected page, proposed change, owner and verification criterion
The re-evaluationThe same base set, the same definitions and an explanation of method changes

Ask the provider to also show you the answers where the brand is missing. Ask how they chose the competitors, how they treat answers without sources and what they can attribute commercially. These answers show how well they can back up their recommendations.

How to organise the first round of checks

You can start with ten questions and three runs of each, in each chosen product: 30 answers per product. This is a configuration proposed for exploration, not a statistical standard or a market share estimate. The repetitions show variation under the tested conditions; they are not automatically independent observations.

Group the questions by stage of the decision: identifying the solution, selecting suppliers, comparing offers and checking a risk. Pick them from sales conversations and existing enquiries. A question that flatters the brand has little value if it doesn't come up in the real buying process.

Keep results separate for ChatGPT, Google and the other products evaluated. Don't merge an answer without search and one with web citations into a single rate. After changes, rerun the entire base set, including the questions that had weak results. If you add questions, show the new set separately.

Your values

Enter answers from a single product and from the same round. An answer counts only once in each category. Categories can overlap; the rates do not add up.

Results

Hypothetical example · change the values for your business.

Hypothetical example: mentions 12/30 = 40%; relevant recommendations 6/30 = 20%; own-domain citations 9/30 = 30%.

The initial values are hypothetical. The results describe only the tests entered; they do not measure all user conversations and do not prove commercial growth.

What to fix first

Is the offer described incorrectly? First correct the public source you can control: services, locations, conditions and outdated information. Also note the errors with no identifiable source; don't assume a single page change will remove them.

Can't the important page be accessed? Check the HTTP response, access for the relevant crawler and the content available in the HTML. Ask your developer to show you the text the crawler receives. The official documentation sets the access conditions; an audit has to identify the actual problem on the site.

Is the company presented vaguely? Complete the service page with the buyer profile, the situations it fits, the deliverables, the limits of the offer and a relevant case. Use claims that can be documented. A list of AI buzzwords doesn't clarify the offer.

Are there mentions but no enquiries? Check the relevance of the questions tested and the page the buyer lands on. Track the identifiable sources and ask in the form or in the sales conversation how they heard about the company. The customer's answer complements technical attribution, but doesn't make it exact.

Work plan for the next round

  • One owner collects the real questions and keeps all the answers.
  • The technical team fixes the proven barriers, and the sales team validates the description of the offer.
  • The editorial team improves the pages linked to the important needs.
  • The re-evaluation checks the same questions and explains product or method changes separately.

You allocate budget according to the problems identified. You increase the investment when there are repeated signals of relevance and an observable commercial link, within the limits of the attribution available.

What proof is worth publishing before your next article

Prioritise content by the commercial question it resolves. If a buyer fears that a migration will interrupt their business, a verifiable description of the process and a relevant case may help more than yet another general article about digitalisation. If they don't understand what the price includes, publish the service structure, the responsibilities and the implementation conditions.

Make a list from your latest sales conversations: the recurring question, the page that answers it now, the proof available and the information that is missing. Start with the questions that block suitable purchases and for which you have demonstrable material. This is an editorial criterion proposed by DDM, not a formula for ranking or citation in AI.

A case sheet must let the reader verify four things: the context, the period, the intervention and the definition of the result. State whether the figure is a campaign peak, a period average, enquiries or contracts. Add the limits that change the interpretation. Precise proof is easier to use in a decision than a spectacular claim without context.

The question for the editorial team: what would a buyer understand and be able to verify from this page, without knowing us and without a sales presentation? After publishing, check commercial usefulness and appearances in AI tests separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can a brand's recommendation in AI be guaranteed?

No. You can improve access and the quality of information, and you can measure the results of a protocol. You don't control all generated answers.

Do I have to choose between SEO and AI visibility?

For Google's AI features, the documentation keeps SEO fundamentals relevant. Other products require checking their own access and measurement rules.

Is it enough to publish lots of articles?

Volume doesn't fix imprecise information. Start with the questions that matter to buyers and with the proof you can stand behind.

The question for 2027 is what a buyer can find out about you before they reach your website. That is where an evaluation of visibility should start.
